Job Description

The ward clerk/CNA through communication, requisitioning and management of supplies and equipment, assists the activities of the nursing staff, the patient, the physician, other hospital departments and visitors. He/she performs general receptionist and clerical duties in order to facilitate efficient functioning of the nursing unit. Participates in assigned patient care duties.


  1. Greets patients and families courteously
  2. Answers the telephone identifying self and area
  3. Relays messages accurately and timely
  4. Understands and demonstrates concern for patient confidentiality
  5. Operates the paging system and EMS radio
  6. File reports into the patient’s chart in appropriate areas
  7. Utilizes CPSI registration to admit, transfer and discharge patients
  8. Orders supplies from purchasing. Helps stock acute care and check supplies for outdates
  9. Coordinates appointments for patients, schedules procedures and obtains requested medical records
  10. Obtains patient signature on all required registration documents
  11. Obtains insurance information, scans insurance cards and verifies eligibility. Collects co-pays when applicable
  12. Demonstrates knowledge of correct use of PPE, follows hospital exposure plan
  13. Attends annual education programs
  14. Demonstrates the skills and knowledge necessary to provide patient care to patients under the direction of nursing
  15. Observes and reports changes in patient’s status and needs, changes in condition and behavior
  16. Answers call lights
  17. Transfers and moves patients, assists ambulatory patients
  18. Demonstrates proficiency in facility fire code drills, red blanket drills, how to activate and call in staff
  19. Participates in hospital quality improvement program
  20. Prepares chart packets
  21. Types forms and policy procedure updates as requested
  22. Proficient in CPSI for registration for order entry, prints EPower Doc and discharge education
  23. Uses PPE when indicated understands hospital exposure plan
  24. Performs other related duties as required and assigned


Education/Experience: High school graduate or equivalent preferred.

Other qualifications/certificate/license: Current State of Montana C.N.A license or obtain within (6) months of hire date and Basic Life Support

Technical Skills:

  1. Ability to communicate effectively and document information accurately
  2. Ability to deal efficiently and effectively with a wide variety of individuals
  3. Knowledge of basic medical terminology preferred
  4. Basic computer knowledge is required
  5. Demonstrate good customer service
  6. Visual and auditory ability to observe daily needs of Acute Care patientsOther qualifications/certificate/license: Current State of Montana C.N.A license or obtain within (6) months of hire date and Basic Life Support
